MORAL FORM

Although many share the view that modern architecture is dull, clinical and depressing, I personally think it's beautiful. There is something about the clean lines, neutral colours and matte, porous textures that resonate with me. Even when finishes and paint start to peel and reveal decay. Even though it's basically concrete. I have no idea why, as I grew up in the British countryside and moved to South London when I was little. Neither have much modern architecture. Maybe that's why I love Berlin so much.

The same goes for my taste in fashion. I've always loved the primary focus of form, simplification of structure, and combining luxurious fabrics with wearable silhouettes, all with a muted colour palette. It is then no surprise that I immediately bookmarked Chapter's AW14 collection (the second California-based menswear brand I've come across this month). Inspired by the harsh Brutalist architecture from Soviet Modernism, Moral Form is based around the garment's functional element and structure. Beautiful imagery too.

While I sit here in a fleece t-shirt and thick sweater surrounded by fan heaters, Californian brands are busy interpreting the cold appearance and harsh lines of Western Europe's minimalistic modern architecture. Grass is always greener.

  6. I love everything that you said in this post, and I feel that in winter I adore the minimalist style so much more. Something about the cold days really draws me to the clean silhouettes. They're beautiful, but there's an air of iciness that I refuse to embrace in the summertime.

  13. That's why i think i was born in the wrong continent (style-wise). I always see myself wearing a structured coat but wearing it here practically turns it into a walking sauna. I'm also find myself captivated with minimalist photos such as those. But guess i just need to find how to make the best of minimal and tropical...
